Brian Minchin confirmed as New Executive Producer of Doctor Who

BBC Cymru Wales has announced that Brian Minchin is to be the new Executive Producer of Doctor Who, alongside showrunner Steven Moffat.

Brian Minchin is an Executive Producer in BBC Wales drama, currently working on The Game, a new Cold War spy thriller from Toby Whithouse for BBC One, and Wizards Vs Aliens, Russell T Davies’ hit show for CBBC. He has also worked as BBC Executive Producer on Dirk Gently and Being Human.

Brian produced the RTS award-winning and BAFTA nominated series The Sarah Jane Adventures, as well as the UK sections of Torchwood: Miracle Day and was Assistant Producer on Torchwood: Children of Earth.

Brian, who grew up in Aberystwyth, joined the department in Cardiff in 2005 as a Script Editor working on BBC One Wales drama Belonging, before moving on to network dramas Doctor Who and Torchwood in the same role.

Brian says: “I'm thrilled and excited to be joining Steven Moffat on a show that has meant so much to me over the years. I've watched in awe as Steven has taken Doctor Who to wild and imaginative places and I can't wait to get started on many more adventures with the Doctor.”

Faith Penhale, Head of Drama Wales, says: “I've no doubt Doctor Who will enjoy a very exciting time with Brian at the helm working alongside Steven. Since joining BBC Wales in 2005, he’s proved he has a fantastic eye for story and a sharp awareness of what makes a drama like Doctor Who unmissable."

Steven Moffat, Lead Writer and Executive Producer, adds: "When I first took over Doctor Who, Brian was there as script editor, and in the most difficult time of a new Doctor and a new era, was completely brilliant. We lost him to producing The Sarah Jane Adventures at the end of our first run. Rising talent keeps rising, is how I comforted myself back then - but now I am beyond happy that Brian has risen all the way back to Doctor Who, in his new role of Executive Producer. I look forward to getting hopelessly lost in space and time with him."

Combat Crime - Use The TARDIS

A 'Think-Tank' have proposed the idea of reviving the old style Police Public Call Box, as seen in  Doctor Who; which has become a trademark of the BBC.

A think-tank suggests opening up modern versions of the 'Tardis' police box
A 'TARDIS' outside Earl's Court underground

Over recent years, Police Stations up and down the UK have been closed down or their manning reduced. Now, a think-tank have suggested ntroducing high-tech versions of the Police Box, which would be more in parallel with the fictional Doctor Who TARDIS.

A better service could be offered to the public if the police left their out-of-date stations and moved into shopping centres and post offices, the report by the Policy Exchange added.

Faced with budget cuts of 20% in the age of austerity, forces need to manage "the police estate in a smarter fashion" and become "more imaginative" with how they interact with the public, the report argued.

In London, the number of people reporting crimes at front counters has fallen by more than 100,000 - almost half - since 2006/07, the Policy Exchange said, as people turn to other forms of communication, including over the phone and online.

As well as opening offices in shopping centres and post offices, the report recommends introducing  police boxes, which would be high-tech contact points featuring video links for the public to communicate with the police. The boxes could be used to report crime, provide witness statements, discuss concerns and access information, the report said.

The Fourth Dimension

Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS

The Fourth Dimension

The read through for Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS was held immediately after production on The Snowmen wrapped for the day on Wednesday, 29 August, 2012. It took place in the BBC’s Roath Lock studios in Cardiff.

Principle filming began on Tuesday, 4 September, 2012 and ran through to Monday, 24 September. However, as the adventure contains a fragment from the very first episode of Doctor Who (see below) it could argued that Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS began shooting on 18 October, 1963 – the day the Doctor’s debut was shot!

The vast majority of the adventure was filmed in studio but the scene on the apparent edge of a rocky ravine was shot on location, weeks after the rest of the episode was in the can. This nail-biting sequence was shot in the Argoed Isha Quarry in the Vale of Glamorgan on Wednesday, 28 November, 2012.

When Clara explores one of the TARDIS’ many rooms she finds the Doctor’s cot, first seen in A Good Man Goes to War and what looks to be Amy’s toy TARDIS from Let’s Kill Hitler. She also comes across a magnifying glass – possibly the one used by the Doctor in the console room in The Power of Three – and an umbrella that looks very similar to the Seventh Doctor’s brolly in Paradise Towers.

The adventure is written by Steve Thompson who also wrote the 2011 pirate yarn, The Curse of the Black Spot. It’s the first episode of Doctor Who directed by Mat King whose previous credits include M.I. High, DCI Banks and Law and Order: UK.

Gregor van Baalen is played Ashley Walters, also known as Asher D, formerly of the group So Solid Crew. Bram van Baalen is played by Mark Oliver who starred alongside Matt Smith in the BBC’s 2009 series, Moses Jones.

This is the second adventure in a row where we hear the Cloister Bell. The Eye of Harmony was also referenced in Hide – you can read about them both in that episode’s Fourth Dimension.
Lancashire is a northern English county and its most famous towns include the seaside resort of Blackpool, referenced in The Rings of Akhaten and the ‘real life’ birth place of Jenna-Louise Coleman. It borders several other counties, including Cumbria; indeed prior to the boundary reforms of 1974, certain regions of what is now Cumbria were part of Lancashire.

When the Encyclopaedia Gallifreya ‘leaks’ and we hear knowledge ebbing from its container, you might just be able to catch the familiar voice of Timothy Dalton – in other words, Rassilon himself from The End of Time.

Immediately after Bram tries to dismantle the TARDIS console we hear an audio mosaic of lines from previous episodes– some more clearly than others… We initially catch the Doctor’s granddaughter, Susan, from An Unearthly Child, revealing how the initials of TARDIS stand for Time and Relative Dimension in Space. Also from that story, towards the end of the sequence, you can hear one of the people she was addressing – Ian Chesterton – expressing his astonishment at the nature of the ship! The clips from that scene are taken from:

An Unearthly Child, episode 1. (see above)
Colony in Space, episode 1. The Third Doctor explains to Jo Grant that the TARDIS is dimensionally transcendental.
The Robots of Death, episode 1. The Fourth Doctor discusses trans-dimensional engineering with Leela.
The Doctor’s Wife. The TARDIS asks if ‘sexy thing’ is her name!
Rose. The Ninth Doctor assures Rose that the assembled hordes of Genghis Khan couldn’t get through ‘that door’.
The Beast Below. Amy Pond reflects that she is in space…
Smith and Jones. Martha Jones struggles to understand the TARDIS.

Matt & Jenna Talk Series Finale

The current series has already given us some terrifying new monsters, familiar foes and even a journey to the centre of the TARDIS. But now Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman reflect on what adventures are in store and what they were like to create…

Next week’s episode is The Crimson Horror, written by Mark Gatiss, and is also the 100th epsiode since the show's return in March 2005. It sees the return of Madame Vastra, Jenny and Strax and features Dame Diana Rigg and her daughter, Rachael Stirling.  It’s the first time the pair has worked together on screen and they play two Victorian ladies who share a dark secret…

‘I loved working with Diana Rigg,’ Jenna reveals. ‘ I loved the way she operated and carried herself… It was great to sit back and watch how mother and daughter worked and their dynamic together.’ Matt agrees, adding, ‘It was an intriguing and creative experience watching mother and daughter work together… Dame Diana has had such an illustrious career and Rachael is a great actress.’

The following week the Doctor becomes embroiled in a Nightmare in Silver. The episode is written by Neil Gaiman and features new look Cybermen. Matt’s not giving much away but he does tell us, ‘I think they’ll surprise a few people…’ Neil Gaiman has confirmed his brief was to make the Cybermen scary again so we look forward to their return with a degree of excited trepidation!

The finale has the intriguing title, The Name of the Doctor, and Jenna lights up as she discusses it. ‘The finale story is such a fantastic idea; it’s epic and huge and filled with drama. It was really exciting to sit down and read the script,’ she enthuses.  ‘There are little bits and pieces which Steven planted a couple of years ago.  It’s just really clever and a crucial moment in the Doctor’s life that you get to explore with the best baddies!  I really think they are going to become another Moffat classic!’

Matt agrees about the ‘baddies’, a brand new enemy known as  the Whisper Men. ‘They’re truly terrifying!’ he tells us, before dropping a couple of hints about what else we can expect from the adventure.  ‘With the 50th this is going to be by far the biggest year in the history of the show.  And the finale is just the start.  It focuses on a pivotal moment in the Doctor’s life and the life of his companion…’

We can at last confirm that the finale will also solve the mystery around ‘the impossible girl’. Having remained tight-lipped about Clara, is Jenna looking forward to being able to talk about her character’s enigma? ‘I am, I can’t wait!’ she admits. ‘All I can say is that Clara hasn’t just met the Doctor three times before…’

Matt nods, but won’t be drawn into saying anything more about the finale. We press him and he finally relents. ‘It’s a complete game changer,’ he concedes with a smile, ‘…and it all starts now!’
Check out images for The Crimson Horror, Nightmare in Silver and The Name of the Doctor and don’t forget, the first of these adventures, The Crimson Horror, is on BBC One this Saturday - 4 May at 6.30pm.

Eve Myles - In new BBC drama 'Frankie'

Eve Myles returns to our screens in a  new BBC drama, where she will play the lead character 'Frankie', a nurse from Bristol.

The six-part series, written by Lucy Gannon (Dad, The Best of Men), sees Frankie, a nurse living in Bristol who cares more for her patients than her own personal life.

Dean Lennox Kelly (Shameless, Doctor Who) will play Frankie's boyfriend Ian, while Derek Riddell (Ugly Betty) will star as her team member and confidant Andy.

"This is an incredible leading part for a female," said Myles. "It's tremendous pressure but also tremendously exciting. I can't wait to step into Frankie's shoes and get on set. I'm desperate to start.

"Frankie is an infectious character, she's electric, quirky, wonderful at her job and adapts to every situation. She's a vibrant woman trying to live life in the fast lane and juggle a job. Lucy Gannon is an incredible writer and writes relationships so beautifully."
Gannon herself added: "I'm thrilled to be writing about strong modern people, people you and I might know, in our real life communities, a team of lively, varied people who all - whatever their flaws - are determined to make a difference, to make life better."

Julia Ford (News Tricks), Leila Mimmack (Inside Men) and Carla Henry (New Street Law) will also star in Frankie, which is currently filming in Bristol and will air on BBC One in May 2013.

As Gwen (Cooper) Williams) in Torchwood:Miracle Day
Eve Myles on Torchwood:

"Torchowood could return  now or... in twenty years time".

"It would be great to come back for a fifth series," she acknowledged. "But it's still there - it's still bubbling away.

"If it has ended in Hollywood with Miracle Day, well, then we came from BBC Three to BBC Two to BBC One to Hollywood - that's a drama in itself. Wonderful experience, wonderful memories."

Myles confirmed that she has heard nothing about a potential fifth series, but added that she is eager to reprise her role of Gwen Cooper.

"When Russell is ready, if he is ever ready, then he's got people who love and adore it just as much as he does," she said.

"It would be great if it did go out with a great bang, as it were, and we got our nice little movie. But who knows? It’s one of those things – it’s a creature that changes format every time it comes back. It might come back as a Christmas special, you don’t know. It could happen now or it could happen in twenty years time. If it pops its little head up again, I’m sure we’ll be back".

Steven Moffat On Finale,New Monsters And More

We’re halfway through the current run of 8 episodes of Doctor Who and still have the 50th anniversary and much more to look forward to! So what better time to catch up with the show’s  lead writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat, to ask him about what we can expect from the future…

Doctor Who's Executive Producer and lead writer, Steven Moffat.

Question: Opening up the final part of this series we get to explore the Doctor’s time travelling machine in Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS, but what surprises can we expect?

Steven Moffat: We’ve already revealed that the Doctor has a swimming pool and the TARDIS has a problem with Time Zombies, but there’s much, much more than that.  We guarantee there will be surprises, but you’ll have to watch to find out exactly where we’ll be going as we finally explore beyond the console room.

Q: Why did you decide to introduce creepy new monsters, The Whisper Men, in the last episode?  What was your inspiration for them?

SM: The great dilemma is that Doctor Who is never more like Doctor Who when it is introducing a new monster, but equally when it’s reviving a foe from the classic era.  Having brought back two of the classics, the Ice Warriors and the Cybermen, this year we wanted a brand new monster to create chills in the finale.  And the thought of stylish whispering almost faceless creatures was an idea that firstly scared me and that I thought would work well in an episode that looks forward and back.

Q: We know that the Cybermen return with an updated design, why did you decide to change them?

SM: One of the things that the Cybermen historically like to do before involving themselves in a new military campaign is run up a new outfit. Throughout the classic series they always changed their appearance and we’ve been very consistent with them.  I thought it was time that they went back to their tailor and had a re-model!

Q: How was it having mother and daughter Dame Diana Rigg and Rachael Stirling on set for The Crimson Horror?

SM: It’s obviously a great honour to have either of those actors on the show, but to have them acting together for the very first time on anything is quite extraordinary.  Only Doctor Who can do this and possibly only when Mark Gatiss is behind it.

Q: What can you tell us about the finale?

SM: It’s full of surprises and questions that have never been answered in the history of Who, including the Doctors greatest secret. We’re not pretending, we’re not kidding, it’s actually going to happen.  The episode is called The Name of the Doctor and involves our hero in a conflict that is very, very personal to him.  Usually he’s saving other people, but this time he might be the one who needs to be saved.  We’ll also find out what makes his new companion so impossible and there’s a surprise that no one has got right so far, and one that will change the course of Who forever!

John Barrowman wants own Captain Jack and River Song spin-off series

John Barrowman has revealed that he and Alex Kingston would like to star in their own Doctor Who spinoff series.

Barrowman's character Captain Jack Harkness has already notably featured in the spinoff Torchwood, while Kingston's River Song has made multiple Doctor Who appearances.

In an interview with TVAddict, Barrowman revealed that he and Kingston have discussed ideas for Captain Jack and River Song to meet.

"Actually, the first time Alex and I met each other... we didn't even say anything, we just looked at each other and went, 'Aaaaaahhh! My god!'" he recalled.

"We got a glass of champagne and started talking about how it would be great if River and Jack... actually, she said River and Jack should have their own TV show."

Kingston has made appearances in the actor's US series Arrow, and Barrowman revealed that the pair bonded on the set.

Barrowman recently admitted that he is disappointed he will not be reprising the role of Captain Jack in the upcoming 50th anniversary special, but admitted that he understands why the character has been left out of the special.

Kingston will play River Song again in the Series 33 finale - 'The Name of the Doctor'.

Could John Hurt be playing the Doctor in the 50th Anniversary special?

There's an insane, thoroughly unsourced rumour floating around that the 50th Anniversary special's major guest star, legendary actor John Hurt, is going to be playing... the Doctor.

Who is John Hurt playing in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary?

Apparently, he will not just be cast as a possible future or alternate incarnation of the Doctor, but the real  9th Doctor, an incarnation that was somehow forgotten  or misplaced during the insanity of the Time War. But if you're thinking this is all part of an absurdly elaborate "Screw you" to Christopher Eccleston by Steven Moffat, the rumour claims that, as Hurt emerges as the forgotten 9th Doctor, Eccleston becomes the 10th, David Tennant the 11th, and Matt Smith the 12th. Note; there's no clear source for this rumour at present.

John Hurt does seem to be wearing items of clothing similar to the eigth and ninth incarnations of the Doctor as played by Paul McGann and Christpher Eccleston:

Artwork - The Oncoming Storm

I came across this on deviantart.com and had to share it.

Artist: saimain.deviantart.com/gallery/

A darker version of the Doctor, the Predator, reminiscent of the Dreamlord or the Valeyard. A man who's been wounded one too many times, whose defenses have finally shattered under the guilt and pain and loneliness of centuries. He has finally turned his back on the universe, becoming the one thing he feared the most. The blood of entire worlds is on his hands, and there is no one left to stop him.

Has Moffat Gone Too Far?

The final episode poster for Series 33 Part 2 has been reveled.

At the end of the last series, Dorium Maldovar:
“... on the Fields of Trenzalore, at the fall of the Eleventh, when no creature can speak falsely or fail to answer, a question will be asked - a question that must never be answered....Doctor who? Doc-tor WHO?...."

Has Steven Moffat about to ruin the greatest science fiction show in the world by revealing the name of the Doctor?

The whole point of the show is that we never trully know exactly who IS the Doctor. The show wouldn't be Doctor Who any more but do we want the next series to be called Doctor Rassdvortelundar (see what I did there by blending Rassilion and Romana's names together). Somehow, I do not believe that Moffat is going to reveal his true name as such. What would be the point of that?

Fans have been creating posters and youtube videos on this very topic ever since Dorium Maldover asked the question, the first question, a question that must never be answered ....

DOCTOR WHO?

At the end of the day, to reveal the character's name, which is probably not penned by the original creators of the show Sydney Newman, C. E. Webber and Donal Wilson. The concept was for the Doctor to be a mystery, an enigma.  Where would the fun be if we were to hear new companions, people he just met ask, Doctor Bob ...? No, I can not see it.

Why the upset? Hark back to the Tom Baker era and  no one batted an eye lid when Drax in the Armageddon Factor revealed his nick name at Time Lord Academy was Theta Sigma.

It is obvious that Steven Moffat is playing with us and there are many, far too many so called Whovians out there who take the show far too seriously. Fandom for Doctor Who has gotten to the point of sheer ridiculousness. I have loved the show since I was 4 year old and not once, have I taken it to the point where hatred so severe towards the head writer is of that to Moffat. Let us just wait, watch and see what develops before slinging mud.

I may have drifted a little but hey ho.

Christopher Eccleston - Journey To TheCentre Of The TARDIS

How true this is I do not know but, Christopher Eccleston will aparrently feature in upcoming 'Doctor Who' episode 'Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS', when the Ninth Doctor's voice is heard as a space crew try and break into the TARDIS.

Christopher Eccleston is returning to 'Doctor Who' - as a voice from the past. The49-year-old actor was rumoured to be coming back for the sci-fi show's 50th anniversary episode in November but decided not to reprise his role as the Ninth Doctor.

However, he will feature in next week's episode 'Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS', which focuses on a spaceship salvage team which captures the TARDIS.

As they try and break into the time-travelling machine viewers will hear the Ninth Doctor's voice say, "The assembled hordes of Genghis Khan couldn't get through these doors, and believe me they've tried."

It is a line from 'Rose', which was the first episode of the new run of 'Doctor Who' which began in 2005 and starred Billie Piper as the Time Lord's companion Rose Tyler.
