Series 35 (9) opener down on Series 34 (8)

According to the BBC write up, 'Viewers in their millions deserted Doctor Who as it returned to BBC One for a new series, according to overnight figures'.

An average 4.6m watched Peter Capaldi back for his second series playing the Time Lord, compared with 6.8m for his full debut last year.

It was roundly beaten by ITV's X Factor, which had 7.3 million viewers. But reviewers were enthusiastic about the Doctor's return, with the Radio Times giving it five stars.

"We're now in the ninth series in 11 years since Doctor Who's revival, and it shows no sign of fatigue. The first episode rattles along with barely a bum note," wrote Patrick Mulkern in his review.

The Mirror said Michelle Gomez as Missy "steals the episode as the demented Time Lady who kills for fun and prances around in the face of greater evil".

And Catherine Gee in The Telegraph described the opening episodes as "packed full of jaw-droppers, one whopper of a cliffhanger and nerdy nods that date back to the time of Tom Baker."

Doctor Who was the most watched BBC programme of the evening, and ratings will rise once figures for catch-up and iPlayer requests are consolidated.

Peter Capaldi & Jenna Coleman Radio Times Photoshoot

Exclusive Doctor Who photoshoot starring Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman

Doctor Who: exclusive The Magician's Apprentice poster revealed

Last year designer and dedicated Whovian Stuart Manning created a poster to accompany every single episode, exclusively for RadioTimes.com. They proved so popular that we've asked him to the same for series nine. This week's was inspired by the Doctor's musical predilections – as Stuart explains.

Doctor Who: exclusive The Magician's Apprentice poster revealed"I thought it would be fun to base this poster on my original design for Peter Capaldi's opener Deep Breath," he says. "So I made the focal point a new profile silhouette of the Doctor, updated with his hoody, shades and ever-increasing Jon Pertwee bouffant, showing how far this Doctor has come from the stern patrician figure seen in his opening story.

"The Magician's Apprentice got me thinking of playing cards, which was a good way to incorporate the profile with a shot of Missy as the Doctor's literal flip side.

"The design itself is inspired mostly by US gig posters, drawing on the Doctor's new electric guitar and reinvention as the universe's oldest rocker. As the kick-off to a new series, I like to think of this as the first stop on the tour – a big, fun opening riff with the Doctor playing up to the crowds. Gallifrey via Vegas somehow seemed to fit the bill."

Doctor Who does the Beatles – but does this picture prove Clara Oswald will die?

Doctor Who does the Beatles – but does this picture prove Clara Oswald will die?

Whovians and fans of The Beatles share at least one thing in common: they love searching for hidden clues and coming up with crazy fan theories. Well, the BBC has just dropped a huge one.

Pretty cool, right? The Doctor, Clara and some Daleks parodying the cover of Abbey Road. One British icon of the 1960s paying homage to another.

But the links go much, much deeper. We know that Jenna Coleman is leaving this series, but this picture could hint Clara is heading for a tragic end.

Did you know that Paul McCartney actually died in a car crash in 1967? It’s true. Desperate to keep the band going, the other Beatles replaced him with a lookalike. At least, that’s what the ‘Paul is Dead’ conspiracy theorists believe.

It’s a rumour that has dogged McCartney since the 1960s, with fans listening closely to Beatles albums (even playing them backwards) for ‘hints’, ‘clues’ and ‘evidence’ hidden in their oeuvre.

One of the most popular pieces of evidence is that famous album cover. Look closely at the Fab Four, especially what they’re wearing…

Now look at the points from the parody shot

1. The Doctor is looking flash and imitating Lennon’s pose.

2. Jenna Coleman has bare feet (she's even pointing towards them).

3. Finally, there’s a Volkswagen in the background, and what does the number plate read?

"DWW 29IF" Get it? Jenna Coleman is 29!

Doctor Who weeps! Turn me on Time Lord! The Doctor is the Walrus! CLARA OSWALD IS DEAD!

Even if this is a fake-out, it’s one of the greatest pieces of fan bait we’ve ever seen. Bravo Doctor Who.

Now if you’ll excuse us, we’ll be scanning Sgt Pepper’s for references to the series nine finale.

Doctor Who returns tonight at 7.40pm on BBC1

SPOILERS! The TARDIS is regenerating

Peter Capaldi explains why the TARDIS is changing .... again

Jenna Coleman confirms she is leaving Doctor Who

Jenna Coleman has confirmed she is leaving her role as Clara Oswald in Doctor Who.

Embedded image permalinkThe actress chose an appearance on this morning's Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw to announce her time in the Tardis was over.

"I have left the Tardis and I’ve filmed my last scenes," Coleman told Grimshaw.

"It has been in the works for a very long time. [Showrunner] Steven [Moffat] and I sat down a year ago, a year and a half ago and tried to work out the best place to do it and the best place in which to tell a really good story. So hopefully that’s what we’ve done.

"I think it’s really, really cool.  Obviously we’re not going to give away any details but it will happen at some point this season."

Coleman says her decision to leave the Tardis was a tough one - "There’s not a lot of jobs where you get to go to work and have a spaceship and an alien as your best mate" - but that she'll certainly look back on it fondly. "It’s such a unique beast. It’s been really special," she says.

She couldn't help getting a little choked up during her final scenes: "I did get emotional. I was really trying to fight against it but you can’t help it. It’s been my life, really, for the last three, four years. And I just love Peter [Capaldi] so much and the job so much and all the crew."

But it turns out she can always pop back for a spot of time travelling if the mood takes her...

"I still have a key to the Tardis," she told Nick Grimshaw this morning. "Because I kind of stole it and stole some other bits and pieces... I stole loads! I don’t know if they know yet! As the scenes were counting down at the end of every scene, I was like: I’m having it, having it, taking it."

For now though, the 29-year-old will be focusing on her new role, as Queen Victoria in a new period drama.

"I am about to start work on Queen Victoria. I have four weeks to become a Queen! It’s ITV. I need to learn to ride a horse. I need to learn to waltz, play Beethoven. It’s really fun."

Hello Sweetie! The Doctor and River Song Reunite For A Spectacular Christmas

Alex Kingston returns to Cardiff to reclaim her role as Professor River Song for the highly anticipated 2015 Doctor Who Christmas special, part of BBC One’s essential seasonal viewing.

It’s Christmas Day in the future and the TARDIS is parked on a snowy village street, covered in icicles, awaiting its next adventure. Time traveller River Song meets her husband’s new incarnation, in the form of Peter Capaldi, for the first time this Christmas.

Day one of filming the eleventh Doctor Who Christmas special starts this week and is written by Lead Writer and Executive Producer, Steven Moffat, produced by Nikki Wilson and directed by Douglas Mackinnon (Doctor Who, Sherlock).

River Song made her first Doctor Who appearance in 2008 in ‘Silence in the Library’ and ‘Forest of the Dead’ and has appeared in 15 episodes to date.

Award winning Alex Kingston comments on her reappearance, “To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special. Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humour and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September? Why not!”

Steven Moffat, Lead Writer and Executive Producer, adds, “Another Christmas, another special for Doctor Who - and what could be more special than the return of Alex Kingston as Professor River Song? The last time the Doctor saw her she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time...”

The witty line-up of guest cast joining Alex for a magical adventure on the TARDIS will be announced over the coming months.

The BBC Cymru Wales produced drama will return to BBC One on Saturday, 19 September with a 12 episode series, followed by the Christmas special on Friday 25 December.
