The War Doctor Volume 02: Infernal Devices

Synopsis

Three new battles for the War Doctor.
2.1 Legion of the Lost by John Dorney

In a time of war, every means of victory must be explored. In the Time War, the unthinkable must be thought, and neither side can afford to be squeamish about their methods.

When the destruction of an obscene weapon leads to the Time Lord once known as the Doctor uncovering a secret Gallifreyan initiative, he cannot believe what is being considered. Should victory be sought at any cost? Or are there worse possibilities than losing to the Daleks..?

2.2 A Thing of Guile by Phil Mulryne
The Daleks are developing a secret weapon on Asteroid Theta 12. It is imperative that their plans are uncovered.

Cardinal Ollistra has her hands full studying the range of ancient and mysterious armaments the universe has to offer, but she makes it a personal mission to investigate the Dalek project. On this dangerous assignment, there is one particular Time Lord she wants at her side - and he will be accompanying her whether he wants to or not.

2.3 The Neverwhen by Matt Fitton
On an isolated world ravaged by battle, time itself has become a weapon, laying waste to all who live and die there. Arms and technology are in a state of flux – and it seems that everlasting war is their only option.

The arrival of one battered Type Forty TARDIS inside this nightmare offers hope to the combatants trapped within. But when he discovers the truth, the horrors of the Neverwhen will shock even the War Doctor…

Leela Returns!

The War Doctor encounters Leela in the heart of the Time War...

Louise Jameson will reprise her role as Leela of the Seveteem, alongside John Hurt's War Doctor in the story Casualties Of War. She was last see in in the Fourth Doctor story The Invasion Of Time, where she opted to stay on Gallifrey after falling in love with a native Gallifreyan called Andred.

In the middle of the Time War, the War Doctor comes across a very old friend; a woman he trained not to be the kill-first-ask-questions-later fighter. Producer, David Richardson says:

“I’d often wondered what became of Leela during the Time War, and working on these War Doctor tales has given us a wonderful opportunity to explore that. And it’s irresistible territory – the Warrior of the Sevateem reunited with an old friend, who has become a Warrior in the Time War.”

Jameson has worked extensively for Big Finish before, notably alongside Tom Baker in the Fourth Doctor Adventures and in the incredible Gallifrey saga. Nick Briggs, voice of the Daleks and Executive Producer, adds:
“Over the many years of working with us, Louise has brought so much extra depth to the character of Leela, and given the nature of her backstory and involvement in the affairs of Gallifrey it was a natural choice to have her involved in the Time War. And like John Hurt, she’s a genuinely uplifting person to work with.”
Casualties of War is released in February 2017 and is available for pre-order priced £20. In the meantime, listen to the 35-second teaser

David Tennant & Catherine Tate return to Doctor Who in three brand new audio dramas

http://www.bigfinish.com/img/news/20151026100139tenth_doctor_cover_textlesscopy_image_medium.jpgDavid Tennant and Catherine Tate are set to return to Doctor Who next year. The Tenth Doctor will return along with his companion Donna Noble in a brand new series of three audio dramas from Big Finish, set to be released in May 2016.

David Tennant portrayed the Doctor on screen from 2005 until 1 January 2010, returning to play alongside Matt Smith and John Hurt in the 50th Anniversary special The Day of the Doctor in 2013. Catherine Tate made her debut as Donna in December 2006, and after a series and two festive specials she made her last appearance alongside David on 1 January 2010. Their on-screen partnership is generally regarded as one of the great high-points of the enduring science fiction phenomenon.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CSPDOqtWUAAwt2u.jpg

'I still remember the sense of joy I had when I heard that David had been asked to play the Doctor,' says Big Finish executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery. 'We were all so pleased for him — as we knew how much Doctor Who meant to him. And now David comes full circle, back doing Doctor Who with Big Finish — except that this time he’s playing the Doctor! It’s the same but different — it’s wonderful to have him back!'

The series opens with Doctor Who – The Tenth Doctor Adventures: Technophobia by Matt Fitton, which is set in a London slightly in the future, where mankind is gradually losing its ability to use everyday technology. Could there be an evil force at work?

In Doctor Who – The Tenth Doctor Adventures: Time Reaver by Jenny T Colgan the Doctor and Donna arrive on Calibris - ‘An entirely mechanical planet. Catch, hitch, fuel, fix, buy, pretty much any kind of transportation in existence.’ It’s also a world full of scoundrels, where a deadly black market has opened up in a device known only as the Time Reaver.

Finally, in Doctor Who – The Tenth Doctor Adventures: Death and the Queen by James Goss, Donna is swept along in a fairytale romance and meets the man of her dreams in the beautiful land of Goritania. What can possibly go wrong? And why has the Doctor never heard of Goritania?

'I’ve enjoyed working with all the Doctors on TV, but David is the only one I’d known before he became the Doctor,' says executive producer Nicholas Briggs. 'I’d worked with him on our Dalek Empire series for Big Finish and had such fun. So along with the excitement of directing new Tenth Doctor adventures, I’m so happy to be working with an old chum again.'

Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor Adventures is produced by David Richardson, script edited by Matt Fitton and James Goss and directed by Nicholas Briggs.
'This is one of those dream projects where I’ve spent months pinching myself. I’m covered in bruises,’ says David. ‘With two major international stars in place, and the legacy of this era of the TV show to live up to, we’ve worked our socks off to try and make some very special stories for this box set. Expect adventure, fun, scares... and some tears too.'

Doctor Who – The Tenth Doctor Adventures will be released in May 2016 - exclusively on the Big Finish website. Each of the three titles are available to pre-order separately today for just £10.99 on CD or £8.99 to download. A bundle of all three titles is also available for £25 on CD and £22 to download!

The War Doctor Returns!

In December 2015, the Time War will rage and only one man can save us. John Hurt is The War Doctor!

http://i1.cmail19.com/ei/r/E4/6B4/177/csimport/banner.104323.jpg
John Hurt, the world-renowned star of film and television, is returning to the role of The War Doctor, in twelve full-cast Doctor Who audio plays.

The War Doctor was introduced for Doctor Who’s Fiftieth Anniversary, and played a key part in the record-breaking television special The Day of the Doctor, alongside David Tennant and Matt Smith’s Doctors. He is the secret incarnation of the Time Lord — but he has shunned the title ‘Doctor’ in order to fight in the Time War against the Daleks.

“I have been a huge fan of John since first seeing him in the repeats of I, Claudius in the 1980s and in his Oscar-nominated role as the eponymous The Elephant Man,’ says Big Finish executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery. ‘Watching his performance in The Day of the Doctor I did find myself fantasising that some far off day we might have the chance to work with him on the audio adventures of Doctor Who and now two short years later it’s happened! John wove a fantastic character together from a great script by Steven Moffat. Now we have the chance to get to know that character more and hear John stretch in the role. We’re all in for a hell of a ride as the War Doctor engages in battle. But who are the greater threat - the Daleks or the Time Lords?”

The audio adventures of The War Doctor will be told over four box sets, each containing three linked hour-long episodes. The first box set is entitled Only The Monstrous, and is written and directed by Nicholas Briggs, whose many successes for Big Finish include the BBC Audio Award-winning masterpiece Doctor Who: Dark Eyes.

“The story of the Doctor who refuses to call himself the Doctor in order to do the unthinkable upon the ultimate battlefield — all of space and time — was irresistible to me,” says Nicholas. “Such a deeply disturbing and engaging character created by the formidable talents of writer Steven Moffat and actor John Hurt. It’s such a privilege to be working on this.”

The cast of The War Doctor also includes Jacqueline Pearce, who plays Time Lord Cardinal Ollistra — an arch manipulator who is waging the Time War against the Daleks. Jacqueline’s work includes The Avengers, Callan, Doctor Who: Death Comes to Time, Moondial and Russell T Davies’ Dark Season, and she is known to many science fiction fans for her role as Servalan in the cult classic Blake’s 7.

Only The Monstrous will be released in December 2015, and will be followed in February 2016 by the second volume, Infernal Devices, which is written by John Dorney, Phil Mulryne and Matt Fitton. Volumes Three and Four are currently in pre-production.

“What an utter privilege it is to work with such an iconic actor, playing such a brilliantly devised role,” says producer David Richardson. “This is Doctor Who at its darkest — the era in which our hero casts aside his core values in order to try and save the galaxy in its most terrible hour. We promise bold and brilliant story-telling with gripping character drama, and epic and cinematic audio productions.”

In addition to The War Doctor, November 2017 also sees a prequel box set to the saga, Doctor Who: The Eighth Doctor — The Time War, which will follow the early stages of the Time War from the Eighth Doctor’s perspective. Paul McGann stars, alongside characters first introduced in the War Doctor box sets.

You can pre-order all four box sets of Doctor Who: The War Doctor, plus Doctor Who: The Eighth Doctor – The Time War today from the Big Finish website, priced just £20 each on both CD and Download, or all five available in a single bundle for easy ordering. Pre-orders on CD have free UK postage, and anyone buying on CD through the Big Finish website gets access to the Download version on release.

Big Finish: Strax meets Jago & Litefoot! - Coming November 2015!

Jago-big-finish-Litefoot-&-StraxVictorian investigators team up for a special audio spin-off from Doctor Who.
Strax, the Sontaran butler to Victorian investigator Vastra and her wife Jenny, will be swapping the Paternoster Gang for a short spell with Jago and Litefoot in a new audio special from Big Finish Productions: Jago & Litefoot & Strax

In this special double-disc release, the Sontaran suffers a disorienting attack, mistakes the two Victorian investigators for Jenny and Vastra and moves into Litefoot’s home. Together, they are on the trail of a creature that is stealing brains, which may or may not be linked to a haunted house in London.

The characters of Jago and Litefoot, played by Christopher Benjamin and Trevor Baxter, were created by Robert Holmes and first appeared opposite Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor in The Talons of Weng-Chiang in 1977.

“It’s a testament to the great Robert Holmes and these two wonderful actors that Jago and Litefoot remain so eternally popular,” says producer David Richardson, “and it’s such a joy to have them set foot in the world of current TV Doctor Who as they join forces with Strax for a special investigation.
Justin Richards’ script is superb, packed with excitement and wit, and it’s so fun to see the mis-matched duo of Jago and Litefoot become a mis-matched trio!”
 Jago & Litefoot & STRAX: November 2015

Dan Starkey, who first played Strax on TV opposite Matt Smith in A Good Man Goes to War, says: ‘The Talons of Weng-Chiang was one of my favourite Doctor Who stories growing up, first in its form as a Target novelisation and then in the prized VHS I got for Christmas 1988. Spool forward nearly 30 years, and I've been lucky enough to encounter Jago and Litefoot in their audio incarnation already, with my turn as Mr. Tibbs in Series Nine.

‘Now it's a joy to bring Strax face to face with the characters who in many ways defined how Doctor Who "does" Victorian London. I hope the sonic thaumaturgy of those clever coves at Big Finish will excite the ears and invigorate the imagination, as Henry Gordon Jago might have put it!’
Jago & Litefoot & Strax will be released as a two-disc special in November 2015.

Jago & Litefoot: Series 10 will be available from October. The previous nine series of adventures are also available to buy, with Series 1 now permanently reduced to just £20 on CD and download.

Torchwood: Ianto Jones will return in October

Big Finish are delighted to announce that fan-favourite actor Gareth David-Lloyd will star as Ianto Jones for the second release in our new series of Torchwood Audio Dramas.
Ianto Jones will return in Torchwood: Fall to Earth
Gareth appeared throughout the first three series of the popular BBC show created by Russell T Davies. A mild-mannered administrator for the Torchwood team, Ianto helped defend Cardiff from the horrors of the rift, and aided the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) in a battle against the Daleks in two episodes of Doctor Who.

Ianto made his final TV appearance in the 2009 mini-series Children of Earth, but his popularity and legacy has stood the test of time, with a special commemorative memorial for the character erected in Cardiff Bay.

“Well, how could we not?” says producer James Goss. “Ianto's such a brilliant character, and if we kept people on tenterhooks any longer, we'd be fools. Of course he's in it and as soon as possible. We recorded with him literally the first day after he finished a theatre tour. Did he want to put his feet up? Nope. He wanted to be Ianto.”

Gareth will return in Torchwood: Fall to Earth, where the team's ongoing investigation into a worldwide conspiracy places Ianto on the first privately-funded spaceflight; just as it's plunging out of the sky! The new release follows on from John Barrowman's return as Captain Jack Harkness in the opening instalment, Torchwood: The Conspiracy.

“Seeing Gareth in studio was an absolute delight,” glowed director Scott Handcock. “He clearly loves the part and had a great time. And can't wait to be back.”
The new story will be released in October, allowing for an unbroken run of stories from September. Four more releases will follow at monthly intervals into 2016.

“There was originally going to be a gap after the first release,” explains James, “but we soon realised that everyone we spoke to was being so helpful, we'd be in studio a lot earlier. Actors, writers, agents, BBC Worldwide have all been amazing - 'Well, since it's Torchwood' everyone kept saying. So it's coming out early. Since it's Torchwood

Big Finish: Doctor Who New Series Audio Update

New from Big Finish: "Further to yesterday's exciting launch of our latest New Series Doctor Who adventures, we can confirm earlier release dates for River Song's Big Finish debut stories."

Doctor Who New Series Audio Update It can now be revealed that Doctor Who: The Diary of River Song, which had a mysterious release date of 'TBA' up until this morning, is to be released in January 2016. Only six months away! (Naturally, we know you can work that out for yourself, we're just a bit over-excited about it all.)

Also, the Eighth Doctor box set Doctor Who: Doom Coalition 2, can now be confirmed for a March 2016 release, brought forward from May.

The bottom line is that you'll be getting to hear River Song in Big Finish audio action a lot sooner than you might have been expecting.

You can hear more about these and other New Series Doctor Who releases in the latest Big Finish Podcast here.

An epic four-hour adventure that takes River Song across space and time, seeking out the secret rulers of the universe.

The Doctor’s past is catching up with him. And so is his future… As a dark chapter dawns for the universe, a friend is at hand. But how can River Song help the Doctor if she can’t meet him?

River Song to team up with the Eighth Doctor for a new adventure

Looks like River Song is coming back to Doctor Who in 2016 – but this time, she’s teaming up with a different Doctor.

River Song to team up with the Eighth Doctor for a new adventure

A new radio drama from Big Finish will see Alex Kingston’s time-travelling archaeologist team up with Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor (as well as his companions, played by Hattie Morahan and Nicola Walker) in Doctor Who: Doom Coalition 2 – but there’s a complication.

You see, the Time Lord’s a few years away from meeting River for the first time in his Tenth incarnation (as seen in TV episode Silence in the Library back in 2008), so she must try to help her oblivious husband without him realising it – or even seeing her. We can’t help but imagine there’s going to be some problems…

“The idea of River meeting previous Doctors was actually proposed by Steven Moffat,” says producer David Richardson, “and it's just irresistible, isn't it? Alex embraced the idea of returning to the role, and so she will be starring in no less than two box sets next year. And yes, we are still pinching ourselves!”

River will later return for a second Big Finish drama in 2016 called The Diary of River Song, which will once again see her join with McGann’s Doctor (so much for keeping her distance, eh?) as she crosses space and time to seek the secretive rulers of the universe. Bet she’ll be sending lovely postcards to the Eleventh Doctor - and maybe we'll get more insight into this earlier version of her character before her final death in 2013's The Name of the Doctor.

Tom Baker Fourth Doctor audios to air on BBC

Tom Baker is returning to the BBC on Saturday nights with the broadcast of his Fourth Doctor audio adventures with companion Leela (as played by original actress Louise Jameson). BBC Radio 4 Extra will air six one hour episodes from Saturday May 16 at 6pm. Check out the details from the BBC below:
Tom Baker returns as The Doctor in a full-cast audio drama. Made for Big Finish Productions in 2012, this is the first time these seven stories will have been heard on radio. The Doctor and Leela respond to an alien distress call beamed direct from Victorian England. It is the beginning of a journey that will take them to the newly built Space Dock Nerva, where a long overdue homecoming occurs.
A homecoming that could bring about the end of the human race.
Nerva first appeared in the 1975 television episode The Ark In Space, which inspired Nicholas Briggs, the writer and director of this episode. This is the first time Tom Baker has played the part of The Doctor since the television series.
These six stories will also see the TARDIS go to a museum of everything, the time of Boudica and London (during a future energy crisis) and conclude with a showdown with some old enemies.

Destination Nerva airs on May 16th

Big Finish proudly presents John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness in Torchwood - an all new series of audio dramas based on the fantastic Doctor Who spin-off series.

Torchwood, the intrepid team of alien investigators, returns in a series of six audio productions, as part of a licensing deal with BBC Worldwide.

Once again, the Torchwood team will be led by the irrepressible Captain Jack, as played by John Barrowman - who broke the news of the series return on his radio show on Sunday evening.

The new series of audio dramas will each focus on different members of the Torchwood team, exploring the impact that a mysterious event has on them. Starting off the range will be John Barrowman, who stars in The Conspiracy, a deadly thriller by David Llewellynwhich is released September 2015.

Torchwood creator Russell T Davies says: “Torchwood has been to the Moon, and America, and the Himalayas, but now I think it's finally coming home, to the brilliance of Big Finish."

What's great about Torchwood is that it is as unstoppable as Captain Jack and just as persuasive,” says producer James Goss. “Torchwood has been a ratings success on nearly every BBC channel, and it's one of the few UK series to translate to America. It's already been a series of iPlayer-topping audio plays, and we are thrilled to continue it. It’s just so exciting to be starting off the range with a drama starring John Barrowman – he leapt at the chance to display a whole new side to Captain Jack.

Executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery says: “It's fantastic that we will be bringing Captain Jack back to life (for perhaps the thousandth time!) with Big Finish. There are many new Torchwood tales to be told and I can't wait for Jack and his team to defend the Earth once again. I am very grateful for the continuing faith that both the BBC and Russell T Davies have shown in us and very excited to enter into a new world for Big Finish.”

Executive producer Nicholas Briggs says: “Torchwood is something we’ve wanted to do for ages. It has great characters and there are many stories to be told. Our mission is to bring a whole new series of dramatic adventures to life. We’re starting off with these more intimate, focused releases and will then move on to bigger casts and even wider scope. We’re very much looking forward to working with all the cast and it’s been such a pleasure liaising with Russell T Davies about this. He couldn’t have been more supportive and helpful. Our Torchwood producer, James Goss, has really hit the ground running and his tangible enthusiasm is already proving rather an inspiration to us.”

Additional cast members for the series will be revealed later.

Torchwood: The Conspiracy will be released in September 2015, with the remaining five instalments following monthly from January 2016.
