Steven Moffat: The Doctor returns to Gallifrey like Clint Eastwood – "a mad, bad, dangerous b*stard"

A finale four-and-a-half billion years in the making, Steven Moffat says that "Hell Bent will push the Doctor further than he's ever been pushed before, turning him into a, "mad, bad, dangerous bastard."

 
The final episode continues the story on from Face The Raven and Heaven Sent, the two episodes in which the Doctor lost companion Clara Oswald, was betrayed by immortal frenemy Ashildr and was then teleported to a labyrinthian castle, where he only managed to escape by tunnelling through a wall four hundred times harder than diamond over the course of four-and-a-half billion years. It's a long story. And on the other side of the wall? His home planet of Gallifrey – revealing that it was all a scheme by the Time Lords. 

Speaking to RadioTimes.com, Moffat says, "I think we probably take the Doctor right to the very end of his tether. I've toyed with it in the past but never really gone the whole hog. What would happen if you really, really, really pissed him off? If you took everything from him, broke his heart, kicked the crap out of him and he got up again – what would you be facing then? It's called Hell Bent for a reason. As has been threatened occasionally in the series, what happens when he gets really mad? Well, this is it. Yes, he goes back to Gallifrey, and he goes back in a very bad mood. 
"

"It took a long time to kind of figure out what it'd be like if he went back there. You've seen him go back – I'm going to talk like a tragic fanboy now – in The War Games and he's obviously a bit sheepish; in Deadly Assassin, he's a bit of a bad boy. But now he's the guy who won the Time War. And they'd be terrified if he showed up. He becomes a badass Doctor, and that's always fun as he doesn't do badass very often. He's too nice. But if you push him far enough – and by god, we push him in episode 11 – it all gets a bit Clint Eastwood."

Extended episodes to conclude Series 35

The BBC has confirmed that the final two episodes of Series 9, Heaven Sent / Hell Bent will both run in extended timeslots.

The penultimate episode Heaven Sent will run for 55 minutes and has been confirmed for transmission at 8.05pm on BBC One on 28th November.

The series finále Hell Bent will then run in a 65 minute timeslot starting at 8pm on 5th December.

The two episodes will deal with the consequences of Episode Ten, Face the Raven, which can be seen this weekend.

Jenna Coleman: "It didn't go as I thought"

Jenna Coleman's time on Doctor Who ebbs ever closer and her character Clara is expected to leave the Doctor's side in Saturday's episode Face The Raven. Jenna has played Clara (Oswin) Oswald since 2012 when she appeared in the Series 7 opener Assylum Of The Daleks.

On her reaction to the exit, Jenna said: "I’m very satisfied. It was a surprise when I read the script, as it always is with Steven’s scripts. It did not go in the direction I thought it was going to go in – which did not surprise me at all. But it’s really cool and different, and good, I think. I hope people will be pleased with it, because it was very fun to play. And sad."

However, there is a glimmer of hope that Jenna may return to the BBC sci-fi show; "Once you’ve built up to an exit – and we’ve been talking about when Clara would leave for quite a while – I think you’d have to be very careful about when and how to do it. But I mean, I’ve got such a fond and special relationship with the Doctor, if it was the right nature of the story, then I would love to. But we shall see."

BDA applauds Deaf character starring in Doctor Who

The British Deaf Association (BDA) applauds Toby Whithouse, the writer of BBC TV series Doctor Who, for including a Deaf character in the latest episodes of the current Doctor Who series, “Under the Lake”. This is the first time a Deaf character has appeared in the history of Doctor Who and is a huge step in helping to break down the negative barrier faced by Deaf actors in the media industry.

In the action packed two-part ghost story, which kept viewers on the edge of their seats, Deaf actress Sophie Stone played the role of group leader Cass who stands up to the Doctor in a disagreement. The BDA is delighted to see a Deaf actress take a prominent role in such a renowned TV show and, more importantly, that her Deafness is incidental to the programme.

Dr. Terry Riley OBE, the Chair of the British Deaf Association, says; “It was fantastic to see Sophie Stone playing the role of Deaf character in the latest episode of Doctor Who watched by millions of viewers across the UK – both Deaf and hearing. What was most heartening was that the Deafness of Sophie’s character, Cass, is incidental to the plot. She is an integral member of the group and was no different in any way, other than that she is Deaf and uses British Sign Language (BSL). Here at the British Deaf Association, we firmly believe Deaf people can do anything but hear and it’s encouraging for such a popular TV series to be cementing this view in its programme.”

“For over 30 years, the British Deaf Association has been encouraging the BBC and Heads of Drama to include Deaf characters in mainstream TV programming so we’re delighted to see Sophie starring in such a well-known show. We hope this will overcome barriers faced by Deaf actors and open new and exciting challenges for them, as well as showing deaf children a strong role model and inspiring the deaf children who might be budding actors.”

‘Doctor Who’ story synopsis revealed for Maisie Williams ep ‘The Girl Who Died’

The BBC has released the official story details for the fifth episode of Doctor Who‘s new season, which features Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams in a guest role.

Written by Jamie Mathieson (‘Flatline’) with showrunner Steven Moffat, ‘The Girl Who Died’ will air on Saturday 17 October on BBC One.

The synopsis reads: “Captured by Vikings, the Doctor and Clara must help protect their village from Space Warriors from the future: the Mire. Outnumbered and outgunned, their fate seems inevitable. So why is the Doctor preoccupied with a single Viking girl?”

 Moffat: “In a backwater of history, in a little Viking village where all the warriors have just been slaughtered, a young girl called Ashildr is about to make a desperate mistake. The Mire are the deadliest mercenaries in the galaxy, famed for being unstoppable and without mercy – and Ashildr has just declared war on them. The Doctor and Clara have twelve hours, to turn a handful of farmers and blacksmiths into a fighting force ready to face down Odin himself. And there’s more – because this is the day when the Doctor remembers where he’s seen his own face before.”
