The Line-Up for Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor

Anyone shouting, ‘Is there a Doctor in the house?’ during tonight’s Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor won’t be disappointed…

Peter Davison (the Fifth Doctor) will be there in person and Matt Smith (the current Doctor) and Colin Baker (the Sixth Doctor) will also be contributing.

The marvellous Bernard Cribbins (Wilfred Mott) will be there in person and there’ll be contributions from former companions including Anneke Wills (Polly), Katy Manning (Jo Grant), Janet Fielding (Tegan) and Bonnie Langford (Mel). Writer and actor Mark Gatiss also features in the show by way of a specially recorded video. 

Celebrity fans in the studio include Rufus Hound, Liza Tarbuck and from Outnumbered, Daniel Roche. There’ll also be video contributions from Professor Robert Winston, Jo Whiley, Bruno Tonioli and following his appearance in The Power of Three, Professor Brian Cox.

And, of course, the next Doctor will be there…

Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor is hosted by Zoe Ball and begins on BBC One tonight at 7pm.

The Twelth Doctor to be announced 7pm on Sunday

The identity of the Twelfth Doctor will be revealed in a special Doctor Who Live TV show to be broadcast on Sunday 4th August at 7pm on BBC One. The Show will also be broadcast live by simulcast on BBC America at 2pm/1c

The new star of the show will be revealed in front of a live studio audience and will be interviewed by host Zoe Ball. The half hour show will also feature interviews from outgoing Doctor Matt Smith and showrunner Steven Moffat as well as past Doctors and companions and special celebrity fan guests. There may even be the odd Dalek or two.

Steven Moffat said : ‘The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who’s taking over the TARDIS. For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve.’

Charlotte Moore, Controller BBC One said, “BBC One is the home of big live events and this special live show is the perfect way to reveal the identity of the next Doctor and share it with the nation. The Doctor is a truly iconic role and I’m more than excited about the booking.”

Ben Stephenson, Controller of BBC Drama Commissioning, meanwhile revealed the code name they have been using for the actor: “We can’t wait to unveil the next Doctor with everyone live on BBC1 on Sunday night. Amongst all the speculation and betting, there has been lots of fun and intrigue at work as we’ve been using the codename Houdini as a decoy! It’s the biggest secret in showbiz, even those working with the new Doctor on other projects at the moment have no idea they are in the presence of the 12th incarnation.”

Last week the BBC advertised for an audience of Doctor Who fans for the show under the guise of a pilot for a TV series celebrating classic programmes. The show has been hidden in the TV listings by scheduling a repeat of Celebrity Mastermind in the timeslot.

Since Matt Smith announced earlier this year that he was stepping down from the role there has been fierce speculation about who will be cast as the new Doctor. Ben Whishaw, Rory Kinnear, Miranda Hart, David Harewood and Steven Mangan have been among some of the big names suggested, all of whom have denied their involvement. The latest favourite, Peter Capaldi, has not made any comment. In a recent interview at San Diego Comic Con, Matt Smith said that he believed that the actor chosen would be likely to be a relative unknown, while Steven Moffat maintained that they had only just started looking.

David Tennant on 50th

David Tennant has provided new hints about his role in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special. The actor told SFX that fans can expect to see a "slightly different" side to his Tenth Doctor when he is paired with Matt Smith's Eleventh."The Doctor tends to lead every scene he is in and when you are sharing that out it becomes slightly different," Tennant explained.

Tennant said that he was not surprised to be asked to reprise his Doctor for the 50th anniversary:  "There is a precedent to this, isn't there?" he said. "For a long time I was starting to think it was never going to happen, so there was an element of surprise there. But the general concept of a multi-Doctor story was something I always expected."

Tennant went on to say that the special will appeal to both the long-term fan and also to the casual viewer of Doctor Who."Doctor Who has managed to be a big success over the past few years by being very accessible to everyone,""We have never been about going for a highly particular audience - although that audience is the reason Doctor Who has lived for 50 years - but rather to have a very broad appeal. I think that aspect is something that people will feel is quite evident in this special as well."

Gigantic Dalek straw sculpture in Cheshire

A gigantic Dalek sculpture made of straw has been created in a field in Nantwich, Cheshire and was built by the local Snugbury's ice-cream store. The sculpture was made to coincide with Doctor Who's 50th anniversary.

Doctor Who announcement .....TONIGHT

MSN UK Entertainment have just tweeted the following:

@msnents: #DoctorWho fans. There will be an announcement at midnight. That's all I'm saying...

At the moment it is not clear what this announcement may be. It was rumoured that the identity of the Twelfth Doctor could be revealed in August, although showrunner Steven Moffat was still maintaining only a couple of weeks ago at San Diego Comic Con that they had barely started looking. It could also be an announcement relating to the 50th Anniversary episode - fans were promised some exclusive content following the debacle of the SDCC trailer. Or it could even be something hitherto unforeseen

The information will be revealed at midnight UK time, so check back here later tonight
