New monsters and returning characters for Series 35 (9)

The official Doctor Who instagram account has given us photos of the new monsters from Block 3 of filming on Doctor Who Series 35(9). The monsters feature in the episodes, The Girl Who Died and The Woman Who Lived, which star Game of Thrones actress, Maisie Williams.


 

Spoilers: Osgood is back – and so are the Zygons!

Also in the new series, we will see the return of a previous Doctor Who villainous monsters our , the Zygons. Last seen in the fiftieth anniversary special in 2013.

After coming to terms with the fact that one of our favourite characters, the lovable UNIT scientist and Doctor fangirl Osgood, was dead and according to Moffat, definitely NOT coming back – but now he has announced that she actually is! But is all as it appears?

Ingrid Oliver is back filming with the hit sci-fi show for a two-part special which will see Osgood return alongside Kate Stewart, played by Jemma Redgrave.

As if you need reminding, this is a particularly surprising announcement given that Osgood was murdered by Missy at the end of series 8. So what is going on?

The BBC confirmed on Tuesday 5th May, that the character would return in a two-part episode later this year, currently being filmed in Cardiff; and not only that, she would be facing off once more against the Zygons, shapeshifting aliens that first appeared in the 1975 story Terror of the Zygons, before making a vaunted return during 2013’s 50th Anniversary shindig, The Day of The Doctor. Here’s Steven Moffat on Osgood and the Zygons’ return:

Osgood is back, fresh from her recent murder at the end of last series. We recently confirmed that Osgood was definitely dead and not returning - but in a show about time travel, anything can happen. The brilliant Ingrid Oliver is back in action. This time though, can the Doctor trust his number one fan?

Question of  course is, is she the real Osgood or a replica? We'll have to watch and see. Also returning is Jemma Redgrave ashead of  U.N.I.T and Chief Scientific Officer Kate Lethbridge-Stewert

Doctor Who Tardis lift doors for Durham Police HQ

Lift doors designed to look like the TARDIS from Doctor Who have been installed at new police headquarters in Durham.

Durham police tweeted a picture of the new doors, apologising that "time travel was not an optional extra".

A spokesman said customising the lifts showed the force could be "professional and still have a sense of humour".

Staff moved into the new £14m building next to its old base at Aykley Heads in Durham City last Autumn.

The tweet attracted one complaint saying the doors were a "waste of taxpayers money".

The six lifts were covered with vinyl wraps, not hand painted, and the cost had been "pretty modest", the spokesman for Durham Constabulary said.

Personalising the headquarters was a "bit quirky" and a "talking point" for anyone who came into the building, he added.

Tom Baker Fourth Doctor audios to air on BBC

Tom Baker is returning to the BBC on Saturday nights with the broadcast of his Fourth Doctor audio adventures with companion Leela (as played by original actress Louise Jameson). BBC Radio 4 Extra will air six one hour episodes from Saturday May 16 at 6pm. Check out the details from the BBC below:

Tom Baker returns as The Doctor in a full-cast audio drama. Made for Big Finish Productions in 2012, this is the first time these seven stories will have been heard on radio. The Doctor and Leela respond to an alien distress call beamed direct from Victorian England. It is the beginning of a journey that will take them to the newly built Space Dock Nerva, where a long overdue homecoming occurs.

A homecoming that could bring about the end of the human race.

Nerva first appeared in the 1975 television episode The Ark In Space, which inspired Nicholas Briggs, the writer and director of this episode. This is the first time Tom Baker has played the part of The Doctor since the television series.

These six stories will also see the TARDIS go to a museum of everything, the time of Boudica and London (during a future energy crisis) and conclude with a showdown with some old enemies. 

Destination Nerva airs on May 16th

Torchwood Is Back!

 

Big Finish proudly presents John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness in Torchwood - an all new series of audio dramas based on the fantastic Doctor Who spin-off series.

Torchwood, the intrepid team of alien investigators, returns in a series of six audio productions, as part of a licensing deal with BBC Worldwide.

 

Once again, the Torchwood team will be led by the irrepressible Captain Jack, as played by John Barrowman - who broke the news of the series return on his radio show on Sunday evening.

The new series of audio dramas will each focus on different members of the Torchwood team, exploring the impact that a mysterious event has on them. Starting off the range will be John Barrowman, who stars in The Conspiracy, a deadly thriller by David Llewellyn, which is released September 2015.

 

Torchwood creator Russell T Davies says: “Torchwood has been to the Moon, and America, and the Himalayas, but now I think it's finally coming home, to the brilliance of Big Finish."

 

“What's great about Torchwood is that it is as unstoppable as Captain Jack and just as persuasive,” says producer James Goss. “Torchwood has been a ratings success on nearly every BBC channel, and it's one of the few UK series to translate to America. It's already been a series of iPlayer-topping audio plays, and we are thrilled to continue it. It’s just so exciting to be starting off the range with a drama starring John Barrowman – he leapt at the chance to display a whole new side to Captain Jack.

Executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery says: “It's fantastic that we will be bringing Captain Jack back to life (for perhaps the thousandth time!) with Big Finish. There are many new Torchwood tales to be told and I can't wait for Jack and his team to defend the Earth once again. I am very grateful for the continuing faith that both the BBC and Russell T Davies have shown in us and very excited to enter into a new world for Big Finish.”

 

Executive producer Nicholas Briggs says: “Torchwood is something we’ve wanted to do for ages. It has great characters and there are many stories to be told. Our mission is to bring a whole new series of dramatic adventures to life. We’re starting off with these more intimate, focused releases and will then move on to bigger casts and even wider scope. We’re very much looking forward to working with all the cast and it’s been such a pleasure liaising with Russell T Davies about this. He couldn’t have been more supportive and helpful. Our Torchwood producer, James Goss, has really hit the ground running and his tangible enthusiasm is already proving rather an inspiration to us.”
 

Additional cast members for the series will be revealed later.

 

Torchwood: The Conspiracy will be released in September 2015, with the remaining five instalments following monthly from January 2016.

Series 9 to revisit The Fires of Pompeii

As usual, the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine (no. 486) features fans putting questions to current showrunner Steven Moffat about Doctor Who. One fan was curious as to if we were ever to discover the link between Caecilius from The Fires of Pompeii and The Twelfth Doctor (both played by actor Peter Capaldi).

Andrea Laford asked:

"I really enjoyed the scene in Deep Breath when The Doctor says to the tramp, "Why did I choose this face? It's like I'm trying to tell myself something..." Will we ever get an explanation of why Caecilius from The Fires of Pompeii has the same face as The Twelfth Doctor?"

Steven Moffat replied:

"Thank you, I like that scene too. And yes, we're coming back to that idea. In fact, we'll be shooting the scene in question really quite shortly..."

Fan emerges from the Tardis to cover Doctor Who theme in this amazing cosplay video

Pianist Sonya Belousova dresses up as every incarnation of the Doctor in this stunning cover of the Doctor Who theme tune...

 

There are thousands of people covering Doctor Who themes on YouTube, but not many of them emerge out of a Tardis, walk across a cloud, sit down at their piano, and then play dressed as every incarnation of the Doctor. 

This is Player Piano, a channel that specialises in huge, visually-elaborate renditions of music from the Street Fighter score to Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. And now, of course, they have turned their sights to the main theme of Doctor Who.

 It's the work of arranger/pianist Sonya Belousova and director Tom Grey, both of whom have injected new life into the theme, with Belousova's array of cosplay being a particularly highlight.
